Cotswold Holiday Cottage

Gloucestershire Cotswold Holiday CottageA little known fact is that The Cotswolds is around the size of Greater Tokyo! That is where the similarity ends. The Cotswold region is made up of the six counties of Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Bath and North East Somerset. This spectacular area in the southwest of England is the country’s largest designated area of outstanding natural beauty.

The Cotswolds are extremely popular with English and international visitors. The rolling gentle hillsides (wolds), ancient limestone villages, river valleys, water meadows and beech woods offer breathtaking views. There are historic market towns, stately homes, cottages and farmhouses full of character where it seems time has stood still. A certain sleepiness in the villages and quintessential “Englishness” is part of the attraction. This most photogenic of areas deserves to be captured, so remember to bring a camera.

There is no better way to experience this area than to stay in a Cotswold holiday cottage. It is a great way to really live a country life style for a few days or a few weeks to experience the culture, food and history of the region. The “Heart of England” as the Cotswolds is known is the perfect destination as every day reveals new treasures. Each morning when you wake up in your Cotswold holiday cottage a cup of tea and hearty English breakfast made with local produce will help you decide which point of the compass you will follow that day.

As you travel through the Cotswolds, you will notice the fields are divided by stone walls. Walls of this type appeared after land was cleared and the stones picked up were recycled to build walls. Some are as old (almost) as the hills themselves but mostly constructed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The stones are cleverly laid with no holding materials like cement and provide a solid barrier and good shelter for livestock. At one time the fields would have been filled with the native Cotswold sheep whose fleeces were in high demand across Europe during the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries as the wool was so heavy and of high quality. This lucrative trade enabled wealthy wool traders during the medieval period to leave a legacy of magnificent houses and elaborate churches. Even today a classic Cotswold view is sheep on a hillside.
